How to Define Your 3A/3B Curly Wig (Tula and Amala) for Tight, Photo-Ready Curls

Tula and Amala are two of our most popular curly textures — and both arrive pre-styled so the curls look tight, glossy, and perfectly defined when you unbox your wig.

This guide will walk you through exactly how to style your curly wig so the curls look bouncy, defined, and polished, just like our product images.

Understanding 3A/3B Curls (Why Your Wig Looks Different Before Styling)

3A and 3B curls naturally have:

  • Soft S-shaped spirals

  • Loose-to-medium curl patterns

  • Moderate frizz without product

  • Shine when properly defined

  • Light shrinkage when dried

  • High definition when brushed with mousse

This means two important things:

  1. They look looser when dry and unstyled

  2. They tighten significantly when fully defined

Your wig arrives in pre-styled.
The tight, sculpted curls you see in product photos are achieved through proper styling — not a different texture.

3A/3B Hair Needs Water + Mousse (Not Oils or Creams)

3A/3B curls thrive with:

  • Lots of water

  • Lightweight foam or mousse

  • Curl-defining brushes

  • Diffusing for extra spring

Heavy creams or oils can weigh the curls down and make them look frizzier or looser — exactly the opposite of what you want.

How to Define Your Wig: The Complete Step-by-Step Routine

Step 1: Start with Clean, Detangled Hair

This makes definition easier and more uniform.

  • Place the wig on a mannequin head or secure it on your head.

  • Detangle gently from ends to roots.

  • Avoid rough brushing that disrupts the curl pattern.

Step 2: Fully Saturate the Hair with Water

This is the #1 tip found across 3A/3B curl care blogs.

  • Work in small sections.

  • Spray until the hair is dripping wet.

  • Make sure every strand is saturated.

Wet hair = tight, juicy curl clumps.
Lightly misted hair = fluffy, undefined curls.

Step 3: Add a Generous Amount of Mousse

3A/3B curls love lightweight stylers.

  • Smooth mousse through each section from root to ends.

  • Coat the hair until it feels slippery.

This product creates the curl definition you see in our photos.

Step 4: Brush to Form Curl Clumps

This step turns soft waves into defined spirals.

  • Use a curl-defining brush (Denman-style).

  • Brush downward until smooth.

  • On the final pass, allow the curls to fall off the brush naturally.

  • Gently shake or scrunch to encourage clumping.

Smaller sections = tighter curls
Larger sections = softer curls

Step 5: Scrunch for Volume & Shape

Scrunching helps the curls take on their natural 3A/3B pattern.

  • Scrunch upward without squeezing out too much moisture.

  • Use a microfiber towel to blot only the ends (no rubbing)

  • Avoid towels that cause frizz.

  • Do not disturb the curls once they start forming

Step 6: Air-Dry or Diffuse

Hooded Dryer (Our preferred method):

Great for even, hands-free drying — perfect if you want definition with low frizz.

  • Set to low or medium heat

  • Sit under the dryer until curls are fully dry

  • Avoid touching the curls while under the dryer to keep them smooth and clumped

As the hair dries, you’ll see it shrink and tighten — which is exactly what Tula and Amala are designed to do.

Diffuse:

  • Use low heat, low airflow.

  • Cup curls upward into the diffuser.

  • Hold in place while drying section by section.

Air-Dry (Softest finish):

  • Leave the curls untouched until fully dry.

Touching the hair before it dries breaks the curl clumps.

Step 7: Break the Cast & Fluff

If the hair feels crunchy, gently scrunch until soft.
Lift at the roots only — not through the curls.

Once completely dry:

  • Scrunch gently to soften any mousse cast

  • Lift at the roots only

  • Avoid raking through the curls

You should now see:

  • Glossy, tight curl clumps

  • Defined spirals

  • Reduced frizz

  • A polished finish that matches our product photos

Troubleshooting: Common Questions for 3A/3B Curls

“My curls look too fluffy.”

Add more water + mousse and use smaller sections.

“It dried too big.”

Diffuse with low airflow and avoid touching the hair.

Frizzy after drying?

You touched it while drying.
Try drying without disturbance.

“The curls look different from the photos.”

The product photos show fully defined curls.
Your wig will match that look after completing this routine.

“The curls loosen when I wash the wig.”

Totally normal for 3A/3B textures — they bounce back once redefined.
